Enterprise Minister Peter Burke says he cannot provide reassurances to workers at Aughinish Alumina’s plant in Co Limerick about the future of their jobs ahead of an EU decision. Burke made the point that while he is aware of the impact on employees, he is not in a position to give commitments about job security before the outcome of the EU process.
According to Burke, roughly 1,000 people are directly employed at the Co Limerick site and through its supply chain. He also said about 900 additional jobs are supported indirectly, indicating a broader regional employment footprint linked to the operation.
The minister’s remarks underscore that workers are awaiting the EU’s decision and that any clarity on employment outcomes depends on that external step. The statements reflect a lack of firm guarantees at this stage, with the minister indicating that further information will be determined by the EU’s forthcoming ruling rather than by domestic assurances.
