Assam’s school education sector is facing simultaneous pressures of declining student numbers and teacher shortages, according to figures cited in the state Legislative Assembly. Official data shared by the Education Minister indicates 60,032 teaching posts in schools across Assam remain vacant. The government also reports that 32,321 schools have fewer than 30 students. In addition, 7,948 schools are said to be functioning without the prescribed student-teacher ratio, raising concerns about compliance with education norms and the workload on existing teachers.

Alongside the manpower gap, nearly 25,000 educational institutions have applied for “provincialisation,” a process that seeks government recognition and support for institutions. Reports indicate that applications are being assessed under the Assam Education (Provincialisation of Services of Teachers and Reorganisation of Educational Institutions) Act and related rules. The government says teacher and principal recruitment in government schools is continuing in line with court directions and the state’s recruitment policy.

Opposition members raise concerns that the combination of low enrolment and high vacancy levels could hinder efforts to improve learning outcomes. The government maintains it is taking steps to rationalise resources and fill vacant positions.
