The Madras High Court, in an interim order, restrains the Election Commission of India from notifying by-elections in five Assembly constituencies in Tamil Nadu: Tiruchi East, Perundurai, Ambasamudram, Viralimalai, and Karur. The order is passed by a bench comprising Chief Justice Sushrut Arvind Dharmadhikari and Justice G. Arul Murugan.
The court issues the injunction until July 31, 2026, and also directs notices to be issued to the Election Commission. In the proceedings, the court accepts arguments made by the petitioner’s counsel, VR Shanmugathan, and provides time for responses.
The Times of India report further states that notices are served to resigned MLAs, including Vijay, and that they are required to file comprehensive counter affidavits within three weeks. The interim restriction remains in effect during the period specified by the court, pending further hearing.
