Typhoon Bavi is approaching China’s eastern coast, prompting large-scale evacuations and major transport disruption. In China, state media reports more than 600,000 people have been evacuated in Zhejiang province, including over half a million in the Wenzhou area, and additional evacuations of over 100,000 people in neighbouring Fujian. Wenzhou, home to about 10 million people, is forecast to face landfall in the early hours of Sunday. Authorities across the region suspend activities and move to protect against heavy rain, with residents reinforcing shutters and preparing supplies.

In Taiwan, Bavi does not make landfall but triggers precautionary measures. The government evacuates more than 14,000 people mainly from mountainous areas, and Taiwan declares typhoon holidays, shutting many workplaces, schools and transport services. Thousands of flights are cancelled and power outages are reported across a large number of households, while some areas see gusts and river flooding risk.

Japan’s remote southwestern islands have already experienced the storm, with power outages and flight cancellations reported. The Philippines reports deaths from heavy rains and related incidents, with authorities also reporting evacuations and closed ports.
