External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar is set to launch India’s official campaign for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for the 2028-29 term at the UN headquarters next week. The announcement comes ahead of a special event on Monday at the UN, where India will formally kick off its campaign for the seat.

The reports also say Jaishankar will meet UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres at UN headquarters on Monday afternoon, following a schedule released by the UN. The meeting is presented as part of Jaishankar’s wider diplomatic engagements during his travel to the United States and Europe.

One outlet notes that Jaishankar undertakes an official visit to Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait and Oman from July 5–10 and is expected to arrive in the United States on Saturday. After the UN events, he is scheduled to attend the third India–EU Trade and Technology Council meeting and interact with EU and Belgian counterparts in Brussels on July 14–15.

The reports further state that India last served at the UN Security Council during the 2021–22 term. Elections for the 2028–29 term are expected in June next year.
