The Income Tax Department says more than 1.7 crore income tax returns have been filed for Assessment Year (AY) 2026-27 for income earned in the 2025-26 financial year. The department notes that over 10 lakh returns were filed on Friday alone. It states that the last date to file ITR Form 1 and ITR Form 2 for the 2025-26 income year is July 31. The department’s figures come through updates on social media, describing the filings as an “already taken” step by taxpayers. ITR Form 1 (Sahaj) is described as a simpler return for resident individuals with annual income up to Rs 50 lakh, with income that includes salary, one house property, and agricultural income up to Rs 5,000 a year. ITR-2 is for individuals and Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs) that do not have income from profits and gains from business or profession but may have income from capital gains. The reports collectively provide the filing count and key deadline and eligibility details for the two forms.
