Educator and climate activist Sonam Wangchuk says he is an “ordinary citizen” and rejects being labelled a “modern Gandhi” or a hero. In statements shared during his indefinite hunger strike at Jantar Mantar, he urges people to become “heroes” of their own lives rather than waiting for someone else to lead.
Wangchuk is taking part in the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) protest over alleged examination irregularities, which is reported to be in its 22nd day. Wangchuk’s hunger strike is reported to have entered its 14th day, with a health update stating he has lost about 7.5 kg since the fast began. He also reports feeling less energetic than the previous day and describes normal fluctuations in energy levels during the strike.
Across reports, Wangchuk continues to call for accountability regarding the examination allegations and says he remains committed to the agitation despite fatigue. He also thanks supporters who share messages online and signals continued mobilisation, including an upcoming march, as the protest continues.
