Nigeria’s Federal Government is reviving the long-delayed digital postcode project after more than two decades and linking it to the National Identification Number (NIN) to support digital identity and access to services. Multiple reports say the initiative is formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding in Abuja between the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) and the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST). NIMC and NIPOST officials state the project connects postcode retrieval to the NIN platform, so Nigerians can verify addresses and obtain digital postcodes through a single trusted source tied to national identity. The agencies describe NIN as an identity system while the postcode system provides location information. The integration is expected to improve access to areas such as government services, financial products, healthcare, education, logistics and emergency response, and strengthen transparency in service delivery. Reports also say NIPOST is licensed as a front-end enrolment partner for NIN registration at post offices nationwide, and that the digital postcode scheme will assign unique, GIS-enabled, machine-readable location identifiers to standing structures across Nigeria. The digital postcode project is described as first conceived in 2006 and receiving full Federal Government funding for the first time.
