Nigeria’s Federal Government is reviving the long-delayed digital postcode project after more than two decades and linking it to the National Identification Number (NIN) to support digital identity and access to services. Multiple reports say the initiative is formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding in Abuja between the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) and the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST). NIMC and NIPOST officials state the project connects postcode retrieval to the NIN platform, so Nigerians can verify addresses and obtain digital postcodes through a single trusted source tied to national identity. The agencies describe NIN as an identity system while the postcode system provides location information. The integration is expected to improve access to areas such as government services, financial products, healthcare, education, logistics and emergency response, and strengthen transparency in service delivery. Reports also say NIPOST is licensed as a front-end enrolment partner for NIN registration at post offices nationwide, and that the digital postcode scheme will assign unique, GIS-enabled, machine-readable location identifiers to standing structures across Nigeria. The digital postcode project is described as first conceived in 2006 and receiving full Federal Government funding for the first time.

The Federal Government has relaunched Nigeria’s long-delayed digital postcode project, more than two decades after it was first conceived, and is now integrating it with the National Identification Number (NIN).The initiative was formalised on Friday in Abuja through a Memorandum of Understanding between the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) and the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST). The agreement, signed by NIMC Director-General Abisoye Coker-Odusote and NIPOST Postmaster General Tola Odeyemi, brings NIPOST into Nigeria’s digital identity ecosystem.Coker-Odusote explained that postcode retrieval has already been integrated into the NIN platform, allowing Nigerians to verify addresses and retrieve digital postcodes from a single trusted source. She noted that while the NIN establishes identity, the postcode system establishes location, creating a powerful foundation for inclusive governance and digital transformation. She added that the integration would improve access to government services, financial products, healthcare, education, logistics, and emergency response, while also strengthening transparency and policy implementation. NIPOST has also been licensed as a front-end enrolment partner, enabling Nigerians to register for NIN at post offices nationwide.Odeyemi described the project as a “game changer,” noting that every standing structure in Nigeria will be assigned a unique, GIS-enabled, machine-readable location identifier. She said the system would leapfrog traditional addressing methods, improving logistics, planning, and emergency response. The digital postcode project, first conceived in 2006, has now received full Federal Government funding for the first time. Odeyemi stressed that the initiative reflects the administration’s recognition of digital identity and national addressing as foundational infrastructure for inclusion and economic growth. Both agencies affirmed that the partnership will expand access to identity services, strengthen verification, and support Nigeria’s digital transformation agenda by linking trusted identity with trusted location information.
