Two first-year commerce students from Thakur College drown in a quarry in Dahisar East, Mumbai, on Saturday, police say. The victims are identified as Om Singh (19) from Andheri East and Piyush Gupta (18) from Kandivali East. Police register an Accidental Death Report and investigate the circumstances.

According to police, Singh and Gupta enter the water at the quarry in the Shaikh Khadaan compound near Sanjay Gandhi National Park, where there are multiple access points and the area is known to be hazardous. They are accompanied by two other first-year students, Aman Giri (17) and Divyesh Patel (17). The group allegedly skips college and reaches the quarry in the morning.

Police say none of the students know how to swim. Investigators state the quarry water can reach 30 to 40 feet in depth during the monsoon, and the victims move into deeper water before struggling to breathe. The two other students attempt a rescue but are unable to save them. Fire brigade personnel and local residents recover the bodies. During questioning, one survivor tells police the group consumed beer near the quarry before entering the water.
