Malaysia’s Johor election results show a strong performance by the opposition Barisan Nasional (BN) against Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition. Multiple outlets report that the Election Commission announces BN winning 48 of the 56 seats contested, while PH wins eight seats, leaving BN to take the majority in the state legislature.

The results are also framed as a shift from the 2022 election. PH, which previously won 12 seats in Johor, is reported to be losing ground this time, while BN’s seat total increases compared with its 2022 performance of 40 seats. The election in Johor is described as closely watched because of its political significance for Anwar’s federal unity government.

Analysts quoted by one outlet say the outcome is likely to strengthen BN’s position within Malaysian politics and prompt PH to assess its voter support after a weaker showing, including despite Anwar’s campaigning efforts for PH during the election period. The reports largely agree on the seat totals and the change from the 2022 results.
