The CARICOM Reparations Commission (CRC) is scheduled to travel to the United Kingdom next week in a renewed effort to build international support for reparatory justice. According to a CARICOM Secretariat statement, the mission runs from July 13 to 16 and focuses on engaging diplomats, academics, and civil society groups, along with parliamentary outreach.
The programme includes meetings associated with UK-based diplomatic missions and regional representatives, participation in a public roundtable discussion at the Institute of Commonwealth Studies at the University of London, and a presentation at the UK Parliament. The engagements are hosted by the Institute of Commonwealth Studies.
The delegation is led by CRC Chairman Professor Sir Hilary Beckles and includes Vice Chairmen Dorbrene O’Marde and Eric Phillips, Vice Chair Professor Verene Shepherd, Barbados’ Ambassador to CARICOM David Comissiong, and Dr Ron Daniels, convenor of the National African Reparations Commission in the United States.
The CRC links the visit to broader momentum for reparations, citing recent international and regional developments, including a UN General Assembly resolution in March declaring transatlantic trafficking and chattel enslavement as the gravest crime against humanity. It also notes a Ghana-hosted high-level consultative conference in June and CARICOM Heads of Government approval of a revised ten-point plan for reparatory justice ahead of the 2026 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Antigua and Barbuda. A media briefing is planned for July 14 at the University of London.
