Aditya Birla Group proposes an additional ₹12,000 crore investment to expand Hindalco’s greenfield alumina refinery at Kansariguda in Odisha. Business Standard and The Hindu report that the expansion increases the refinery’s capacity from 1 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) to 3 mtpa. The Business Standard report says the planned increase takes the overall project cost to about ₹20,000 crore.

The Hindu adds that Hindalco is already implementing the Kansariguda refinery project with an earlier investment of about ₹8,000 crore for the 1 mtpa phase. The company also has existing operations in Odisha, including a refinery and two smelter plants, and the new investment relates specifically to further scaling the Kansariguda alumina refinery.

Business Line highlights expected broader impacts, stating the expansion is expected to generate jobs and support downstream industries, reinforcing Odisha’s role in aluminium and metallurgy. No source provides details on timelines, regulatory approvals, or financing arrangements for the additional investment.
