The Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (ARTUZ) says it is joining a wider alliance of civic groups to oppose Constitutional Amendment Act No. 3 and the extension of President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s term. In a National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held on Saturday, ARTUZ adopted several resolutions that focus on defending constitutional protections and coordinating planned public action.

Across the reports, ARTUZ’s stated position is that the constitutional changes could weaken democratic safeguards. The union also links its mobilisation to teachers’ welfare concerns, including calls for better conditions and addressing what it describes as poor salaries.

The union says it is working on a protest agenda, including plans to demonstrate at or in connection with parliament. Zimbabwe Independent and New Zimbabwe both report ARTUZ’s intent to join the broader resistance efforts and outline the union’s decision-making at the NEC meeting, including the emphasis on constitutional opposition alongside teachers’ material concerns.
