The South Korean Navy searches for a sailor who goes missing during an East Sea patrol and later recovers the body, according to military accounts. The sailor is reported missing on Sunday morning while aboard a naval vessel on a patrol mission about 50 kilometers off Geojin in Gangwon Province, near the Northern Limit Line. The Navy launches a search operation in cooperation with the Coast Guard, deploying ships and aircraft to locate the missing service member. The sailor’s identity is not released.
On Monday, the Navy says it has recovered the body of the sailor from the sea. The armed services states the body is found and retrieved at 5:58 a.m. in waters about 52 kilometers off Geojin’s east coast. The recovery follows the initial search effort that involved roughly 10 ships and aircraft.
The Navy also reports that the sailor was reported missing after failing to report for the morning watch. The service does not provide additional details about the circumstances leading to the disappearance beyond the timing and location of the patrol and the missed duty report.
