The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) recommends that the Department of Justice (DOJ) file charges against former Ateneo de Manila University men’s basketball head coach Tab Baldwin and several others following the deaths of Ateneo student-athletes Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili. The recommendation comes after the NBI Homicide Division completes its investigation into a drowning incident during an Ateneo team training activity in Dipaculao, Aurora, on June 8.
According to the NBI, the case involves reckless imprudence resulting in homicide, a charge the bureau recommends for Baldwin and additional respondents identified in the probe. Different reports specify the number of recommended respondents as Baldwin plus either 10 or 11 other individuals, but all accounts link the recommendation to the same June 8 drowning deaths of Baterbonia and Adili.
The NBI’s recommendation does not itself determine guilt, but it is submitted to the DOJ for filing action. Reports agree that the recommendation is based on the NBI Homicide Division’s findings after the investigation into the incident.
