Parents of pupils at the Federal Government College (FGC) Staff School in Sokoto express dissatisfaction with teachers’ current pay and raise concerns during the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) Annual General Meeting held on Sunday. Parents say some teachers have served for up to 20 years yet receive what they describe as inadequate salaries. They cite the salary level as increasing only from N55,000 to N60,000 and argue it does not meet teachers’ needs.
The PTA leadership says teachers’ welfare directly affects morale and performance, and they link poor remuneration to potential declines in productivity and pupils’ academic outcomes. Parents call for a minimum monthly salary of N100,000 and request an additional N30,000 as a lesson allowance.
Beyond pay, parents also raise other demands, including greater transparency in how the school manages finances and more inclusive engagement when decisions are made on school fees. They appeal for repairs to damaged roads within the school premises and ask for improvements that support the learning environment. The headteacher responds by noting water issues have been addressed through a new solar-powered borehole, and requests PTA support for solar power in the nursery section. The school board chairman says resolutions from the meeting will be forwarded to relevant authorities for consideration and action.
