President Bola Tinubu directs the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) to enroll all Nigerians into its national identity database by the end of 2026. NIMC Director-General/CEO Abisoye Coker-Odusote announces the directive while speaking on Channels TV’s Sunday Politics programme, describing it as a shift toward enrolling people at the community level.

According to the NIMC chief, the commission has already captured 137,371,080 Nigerians in its database. She also says the President gives NIMC time until the end of 2026 to complete enrollment of every Nigerian.

One outlet reports that NIMC is partnering with relevant organisations under the World Bank’s Identification for Development (ID4D) project to help meet the nationwide enrollment target. Across the reports, the stated goal is to expand the coverage of Nigeria’s national identity system for broader governance and service delivery, with no competing figures or deadlines presented by other sources.
