Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Education suspends a planned increase in examination registration fees for WASSCE and NECO SSCE following public backlash, according to multiple outlets. The suspension is linked to a June 18 letter the ministry issued to examination bodies directing a review of SSCE/WASSCE costs and a move toward a uniform fee of N50,000 per candidate. The ministry says that proposal is placed on hold: the earlier letter is withdrawn to allow for broader stakeholder engagement before any future decision. Reports indicate the ministry will engage extensively with key stakeholders including WAEC and NECO, state ministries of education, school proprietors, parents’ associations, organised labour, and other education stakeholders. The government adds that fees had remained largely unchanged despite higher operational costs such as logistics, security, printing, and technology, but it acknowledges concerns raised by the public. The suspension means the proposed fee review will not take effect as previously communicated until consultations are completed.

1 hour agoThe Federal Government has suspended the recently announced increase in fees for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and the National Examinations Council (NECO) Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE). The decision follows widespread public criticism and backlash over the fee increments. The suspension was announced in a statement by the Director of Press and Public Relations at the Federal Ministry of Education, Boriowo Folasade, on Monday. According to the government, the June 18, 2026 letter conveying the hike has been withdrawn to allow for further review and broader stakeholder engagement. “The Ministry acknowledges the concerns and constructive feedback received from the public and appreciates the keen interest shown by Nigerians in matters relating to access to quality education,” the statement read. It noted that the proposed review was driven by prevailing economic realities and rising costs of conducting credible examinations, as fees had remained largely unchanged for years despite increases in logistics, security, printing, technology, and other operational expenses. However, the Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, directed that the proposal be placed on hold in line with the federal government’s commitment to inclusive and evidence-based policymaking. The ministry said it will now engage extensively with examination bodies, state ministries of education, school proprietors, parents’ associations, organized labour, and other stakeholders before any future decision. “The proposed review of examination registration fees will not take effect, as earlier communicated, pending the conclusion of the consultation process,” the statement added. The government reassured Nigerians that the welfare of students and equitable access to quality education remain central to the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The fee hike had drawn sharp condemnations, including from former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who described it as insensitive.
