Sir Olly Robbins, the former top civil servant at the Foreign Office, is challenging his dismissal by Prime Minister Keir Starmer through a legal application described as a judicial review. Multiple outlets report that Robbins was removed during the fallout from the Mandelson security vetting scandal, in which it emerged that Peter Mandelson had not passed crucial security checks before being appointed UK ambassador to Washington.
Robbins’ challenge, as described by the FDA union, argues that Starmer acted unlawfully and unreasonably and that there was no fair procedure involved in his dismissal. The union and reports say Robbins also contends that Starmer had no statutory authority to dismiss the Head of the Diplomatic Service. Starmer previously told the House of Commons that it was surprising Robbins had not informed ministers about the vetting concerns, and that Robbins lost his confidence.
The reports also say Robbins argues he was prevented from offering further details about the vetting process with ministers, and he is now seeking court review to quash the prime minister’s decision.
