Punjab’s Governor approves an ordinance that regulates fee increases by private, unaided schools in the state. According to multiple reports, the ordinance limits annual fee hikes to a maximum of 5% without prior approval from the relevant regulatory authority. The move follows approval by the Punjab Cabinet in June, when the government moved to amend the Punjab Regulation of Fee of Unaided Educational Institutions Act, 2016. The Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann says the Governor’s nod has been granted to the “Punjab Regulation of Fee of Unaided Education Institutions (Amendment) Ordinance, 2026.”

The reports also say the ordinance is intended to control what the state describes as “unnecessary and unreasonable” fee increases and to improve transparency and accountability in how schools set fees. Officials say the amendment provides clearer definitions of fee and fee enhancement and allows the regulatory body to scrutinise fee-related changes. NDTV and other outlets report the Chief Minister announces a dedicated portal to support implementation. The government frames the decision as a way to protect students and parents from arbitrary charges and multiple kinds of fees.
