Authorities report that an aircraft used to support firefighting efforts crashes into a reservoir in southwestern Colorado, killing the pilot. The incident is reported to have occurred near the Silver Jack Reservoir, with the aircraft reported down on Sunday. The Gunnison County Sheriff’s Office says divers recover the pilot’s body. The pilot is believed to be the only person on board. The aircraft was assisting firefighters with the Gold Mountain Fire, which has been burning for about two weeks and is estimated to have grown to roughly 57 square miles (148 square kilometers). As of early Monday, the fire is reported to be about 13% contained.

Following the crash, an email requesting additional information is reportedly sent to the Federal Aviation Administration. The crash comes amid broader wildfire activity across the western United States, where multiple large fires continue to burn in several states. Weather officials warn that prolonged hot and dry conditions are expected to raise fire-weather concerns in the region.
