Nigeria’s Senate and the Presidency are criticising Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde’s request for a United Nations-led investigation into the abduction of pupils and teachers in the Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State. According to reports, the Senate challenges Makinde’s proposal, urging him to stop what it describes as trivialising a serious and traumatic incident. Senators also argue that bringing the UN into the matter could undermine Nigeria’s sovereignty and the work of local security agencies.
The Presidency similarly dismisses the UN probe call as unnecessary and politically motivated, saying Nigeria’s security institutions have already provided detailed explanations about the rescue operation. The Presidency’s position is that the incident has been handled through existing processes and that any additional external inquiry is unwarranted.
Makinde maintains that his call is intended to establish the full facts, support accountability, and help restore public confidence, while insisting it does not aim to undermine local institutions. The abducted victims, reported as 45 in total, are said to be receiving medical and psychological support after being handed over to Oyo State authorities following their release.
