Jeju Island’s government is again discussing a proposal to allow Chinese tourists to drive rental cars on the resort island, reviving a long-running dispute over safety, liability and regulatory gaps. On July 2, Vice-Governor Park Cheon-su said the change could increase visitor spending, noting that many independent foreign travelers are Chinese but currently cannot use rental vehicles. He added that Jeju could consider limited measures such as several hours of driving training over a short period as part of easing restrictions.

The remarks prompted immediate criticism online. Opponents question who would be responsible if accidents occur and whether Jeju’s road safety system can handle a potential rise in drivers who may be unfamiliar with Korean traffic rules. The debate also reflects earlier concerns raised over insurance coverage and enforcement in cases involving foreign drivers.

In response to the backlash, the provincial government issued a statement on July 4 saying the proposal was not a finalized or reviewed policy decision. As of now, the issue remains under discussion rather than approved action, with authorities indicating they are still considering the implications.
