Europe’s day is dominated by crisis and shock. In France and Spain, “monster” wildfires are forcing more than 325,000 people from their homes as extreme heat and shifting winds fuel some of the worst blazes seen in decades, with leaders in both countries scrambling resources and warning that the next 48 hours could be decisive. Paris was also rattled by a knife attack that left three women wounded, two seriously, before police detained a suspect and began searching for a motive. And Germany marked the death of Gunther von Hagens, the anatomist behind Body Worlds, whose preserved human-body exhibits captivated and unsettled audiences in equal measure.
