Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reports a sequence of earthquakes affecting parts of Mindanao and nearby provinces. On Tuesday, July 14, aftershocks triggered tremors in Davao Occidental and surrounding areas. Phivolcs said a magnitude 5.3 aftershock, followed by a magnitude 4.5 quake, struck Sarangani and Davao Occidental. The 5.3 event had a reported depth of 10 kilometers and registered Instrumental Intensity I in areas including General Santos City, Malungon, Sarangani, Tupi, and South Cotabato. The following day, July 15, Phivolcs also reported a magnitude 4.2 earthquake in Davao Occidental. The epicenter was located about 24 kilometers northwest of Sarangani Island, and earlier an additional aftershock of magnitude 4.6 was recorded on the morning of July 14 with an epicenter about 40 kilometers west of Balut Island. Phivolcs attributes these tremors to aftershocks of a prior magnitude 7.8 earthquake that hit the Mindanao region last June. Separate coverage also notes that a magnitude 4.2 quake occurred in Occidental Mindoro during the same period.
