Actor Omi Vaidya, known for playing Omi in the film “3 Idiots,” voices support for engineer-activist Sonam Wangchuk as he continues an indefinite hunger strike at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar. According to reports, Wangchuk, who says he is not asking people to end his fast, calls on the government to hold dialogue and addresses what he describes as examination irregularities. Multiple outlets report that Wangchuk’s health is declining as the protest enters its seventeenth day.
Vaidya links the support to the inspiration for “3 Idiots,” stating that the character Phunsukh Wangdu/Funsukh Wangdu was based on Wangchuk’s ideas, while Aamir Khan played Wangdu in the 2009 film. Vaidya also urges people to reconsider the hunger strike due to concerns about Wangchuk’s wellbeing while continuing to support the underlying demand for accountability. Activist Prashant Bhushan is reported to have shared or amplified Vaidya’s message on social media, and Wangchuk calls for broader public involvement and accountability from those in power.
