The House of Representatives’ impeachment prosecution team says it will no longer present Office of the Vice President (OVP) chief-of-staff and Undersecretary Zuleika Lopez as a witness. Lawyer Lorna Kapunan, a private counsel for the prosecution team, made the announcement during the trial session on Tuesday. Kapunan said Lopez’s testimony would be unnecessary and redundant, stating that her account would overlap with other planned witness examinations. She argued that Lopez’s and Capt. Belinda Bello’s testimonies on allegations that Vice President Sara Duterte made grave threats would be covered by the examination of two National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) witnesses, including Senior Agent John Mark Calilung. The prosecution’s decision means Lopez will not be called to testify in the impeachment proceedings, at least for the current phase where witnesses are being presented and examined. The prosecution team’s reasoning focuses on avoiding surplus testimony and limiting the repetition of evidence already expected from other witnesses.
