Reggae singer Fantan Mojah has died at age 49, about three weeks before his 50th birthday. Jamaica Observer reports he dies Tuesday evening at the University Hospital of the West Indies in Kingston after complications related to his heart. The report says his condition deteriorates rapidly over the days before his death, including an account from a booking agent that he was admitted to the hospital and later was vomiting blood before he died.
Earlier articles also describe his death occurring shortly before his birthday and note the reactions from fans and the music community, with tributes highlighting his uplifting, spiritually charged reggae songs and his lasting legacy.
The Observer adds that Mojah was preparing to perform at this year’s Reggae Jam Festival in Germany, with reported Schengen visa approvals. It also notes he had serious health issues in recent years, including a hospitalisation in Martinique in July 2024 for breathing difficulties and chest tightness, with earlier reports that his heart function was significantly reduced. Afterward, he appeared to recover and resumed touring in Europe before his death.
His real name is reported as Owen Moncrieffe.
