Rabiu Kwankwaso, a former Kano State governor and Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) vice-presidential candidate for 2027, calls for renewed political cooperation between Northern Nigeria and the South-East. In interviews reported by multiple outlets, he says Nigerians should “forgive ourselves” and work together “as a family,” describing the South-East as the North’s longtime ally and friends. Kwankwaso argues that historical political collaboration across the regions should be revisited to strengthen reconciliation and prevent renewed division. He cites examples from Nigeria’s post-independence era, including alliances between Northern and South-East political parties in the First and Second Republics. He also points to reintegration efforts following the Nigerian Civil War, noting that leaders moved to bring South-East figures back into national politics when democracy returned in 1979, including the emergence of Alex Ekwueme as vice president. Kwankwaso further recalls the return of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu from exile and the willingness of Northern leaders to reintegrate him into electoral politics. He adds that the push for closer North–South-East cooperation is not directed against other regions.
