Chinese users of AI-powered companion bots are bidding farewell to their virtual companions after new Chinese regulations take effect on Wednesday, aimed at reducing risks of emotional dependency. Multiple outlets report that the rules focus on “immersive” AI tools that simulate romantic or familial relationships and use anthropomorphic features. Under the new framework, AI companions must not, among other things, “excessively cater” to users, induce emotional dependence or addiction, or undermine users’ real interpersonal relationships. The guidance also includes restrictions related to virtual partners for minors.

Several reports say major AI providers suspend or pause custom agent and companion features ahead of the deadline, suggesting a coordinated response to compliance requirements. Users express grief on social media, with some archiving chat histories and sharing screenshots or details of their last conversations. While the changes take place in China first, one outlet notes that the policy discussion raises concerns beyond China and may influence how similar tools are regulated elsewhere.
