The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) announces the conviction and sentencing of 28-year-old Ashiru Idris for advertising cannabis for sale on social media. The NDLEA says the case was handled by its Kano Strategic Command and that a video promoting cannabis surfaced online, leading to Idris’s arrest on April 22, 2026. According to the reports, the matter is tried at the Federal High Court in Kano.

The Federal High Court in Kano, presided over by Justice S. M. Shuaibu, sentences Idris to seven years in prison. The sentencing is described as taking effect from July 14, 2026, and the judgment is reported as not allowing a fine as an alternative to imprisonment. The NDLEA and court details are communicated through the agency’s Kano Media and Advocacy Officer, Sadiq Muhammad Maigatari. The NDLEA also calls the decision a deterrent and urges the public, families, community leaders, and social media platforms to support anti-drug efforts by sharing information that can help identify and prosecute illegal drug activity.
