Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar and the Allied People’s Movement (APM) call on President Bola Tinubu to order a temporary suspension or step-aside for Minister of Works David Umahi as investigations continue into the death of Mary Habila. The calls follow Habila’s death in Ebonyi State, where she is reported to have been found dead on June 27 in accommodation linked to Umahi.
Atiku urges Tinubu to direct Umahi to step aside or suspend him pending the conclusion of investigations, arguing that an independent and credible inquiry is needed. He also calls for police handling of the case to be strengthened, including transferring the matter to Force Headquarters, involving independent forensic experts, and conducting an internationally credible autopsy with findings made public.
APM likewise urges Tinubu to suspend Umahi and commission an open, independent, and transparent inquest into Habila’s death. In reporting on the broader dispute, Umahi’s legal team welcomes forensic autopsy and says Habila was staying in staff accommodation rather than his personal residence. Habila’s family has asked an Ebonyi State court to halt the police investigation and has refused an autopsy.
