The Supreme Court extends the deadline for holding civic elections for Bengaluru’s Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) until December 31, 2026. Multiple reports say the court grants the extension after Karnataka cites delays linked to revisions of the electoral rolls, including the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list, which the state indicates is underway and expected to be concluded by November. The elections cover five municipal corporations within the GBA framework, including elections for 369 wards, after earlier deadlines lapsed. Media reports add that this is the second postponement granted by the court during the year. The court had previously set a deadline of August 31, which is extended to December 31, 2026. One report also notes that the court cautions against further delay, indicating it will not consider additional excuses beyond the extended date. Karnataka’s leadership, including the state chief minister, is reported to assure compliance with the order and the completion of pending local body polls within the timeline set by the court. Until elections are held, Bengaluru continues to function without elected representatives in its urban local bodies.
