Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma says he has approached filmmaker Aditya Dhar to direct a large-scale biopic on Ahom commander Lachit Borphukan. Sarma made the remarks during a Facebook Live, noting that discussions are ongoing and that he plans to meet Dhar in August to continue deliberations. He also said the government’s goal is to produce a “grand” biopic aimed at reaching a national and international audience, potentially on a Bollywood-scale production. Sarma added that if Dhar is unable to take on the project, Assam would approach other filmmakers.
The reports also place the news in the context of Dhar’s recent work, including the “Dhurandhar” franchise, which has been described as a major success. However, neither outlet reports any formal agreement or official announcement of casting, production plans, or release timelines for the Borphukan film. Lachit Borphukan is widely recognized as a key military leader in the Ahom Kingdom, particularly for his role in the 1671 Battle of Saraighat against the Mughal forces.
