Lagos State Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat says he had not met or discussed with his prospective 2027 running mate, Damilola Sonayon-James, before the All Progressives Congress (APC) selected her. Hamzat made the statement during the public presentation of “Who Is She?” held at the Syrian Club Event Centre. He said he had specified the qualities he wanted in a deputy governor candidate, but that he did not have a prior relationship with Sonayon-James. According to Hamzat, President Bola Tinubu delegated the choice of the running mate to the Lagos APC, agreeing with his views that the position should go to a young woman. He also said the party considered Lagos zoning arrangements, noting his base in Lagos East and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s background in Lagos Central, which led to the deputy slot going to Lagos West. Hamzat added that until Sonayon-James was selected, he did not know her phone number and only obtained it through another person. He said the final choice was based on merit, describing her as an active grassroots politician with a record of community service.
