Germany is seeing the spread of an invasive green-yellow western whip snake, with conservationists concerned about its impact on local ecosystems. According to Euronews reporting from the Western Palatinate region, the snakes are being found near a landfill and have begun spreading beyond that location. Reptile expert Hubert Laufer is leading efforts to capture and remove the species. He has already caught more than 300 individuals, but says the hunting continues because the animals are still present and the population may be expanding. The reporting links the initial appearance of the snakes to the landfill area, suggesting human-associated pathways may have helped them establish and spread. Laufer’s continued removal work reflects an ongoing response to a non-native species becoming established in the wild. The coverage focuses on the scale of the captures so far and the rationale for persisting with control measures, while noting that the snake is considered invasive and is drawing monitoring and concern from conservationists.
