The Trump administration accuses China’s Moonshot AI of improperly using capabilities from leading US artificial intelligence systems and obtaining restricted computer hardware. Michael Kratsios, a White House science and technology adviser and director of the Office of Science and Technology Policy, says the administration has information that Moonshot used a covert approach to “distill” Anthropic’s Claude Fable 5 model. Multiple outlets report that the alleged technique is described as extracting or compressing model capabilities to support Moonshot’s own development.
Kratsios also alleges Moonshot acquired Blackwell-generation Nvidia chips and Nvidia-equipped servers abroad, including in Thailand, which he says would bypass or work around US export controls. The claims are presented as part of increased US scrutiny of the company after it released its Kimi K3 model.
The reports focus on the administration’s accusations regarding both software-related actions (model distillation from Anthropic) and hardware-related actions (use of restricted Nvidia components obtained outside the US).
