The Ministry of Human Services and Social Security reports that it is extending counselling and psychosocial support for people affected by the MV Barima tragedy. Ministers Dr Vindhya Persaud says the government has mobilised social workers, counsellors and psychologists to provide ongoing support to survivors, bereaved families and others impacted by the incident. The ministry is maintaining these services as part of what it describes as a longer-term response to the national disaster rather than a short-term emergency measure.
Sources also report that the ministry has organised support through regional deployment of social workers and psychologists, indicating coverage across multiple areas. In addition, the government has established a command centre at Umana Yana to coordinate aspects of the response.
Separately, Dr Persaud says the government is developing a comprehensive long-term support strategy for survivors and affected families, with assistance extending beyond immediate emergency efforts. The strategy is described as involving psychosocial services and coordinated support across several agencies to sustain assistance over time.
