Patreon, the creator subscription platform, says it is laying off 20% of its employees as part of a restructuring of its internal operations. Multiple outlets report the cuts will affect about 93 workers. CEO Jack Conte communicates the decision to employees in a memo, describing the change as “painful” and aimed at adjusting the company’s cost structure and management approach.
Conte says the company’s core subscription business remains strong and is not the reason for the job eliminations. He also addresses the role of artificial intelligence, stating that the layoffs are not due to a belief that AI replaces humans, while acknowledging that AI and broader industry changes have affected how people work and how technology is used.
Other reports describe the company as trying to streamline or refocus resources on key product areas and long-term priorities. Variety additionally reports that affected employees receive at least 16 weeks of severance. Overall coverage frames the layoffs as cost trimming and organizational changes in response to market conditions rather than a direct AI-driven mandate.
