A dispute has erupted within Nigeria’s Democratic Congress (NDC) involving Peter Obi’s ally Morris Monye and the party’s spokesperson Theo Agada over the Delta North House of Representatives primary ticket. Monye alleges that his candidacy was removed and replaced, claiming political figures—particularly recent defections from the All Progressives Congress (APC)—influenced the outcome. He also says the returning officer manipulated results to favour another aspirant, adding that he had briefed Obi, who advised him not to let the controversy distract from the party’s broader presidential ambition. Monye also argues that he is a long-standing member who made financial and structural contributions to the party, including donating a constituency secretariat.
Agada denies any involvement by the national leadership, saying candidate selection is handled at the state level. He points to local leaders, naming Prof. Pat Utomi and Victor Ochei, and rejects claims that financial influence determined results. He also argues that the party’s form process—selling Expression of Interest forms only—suggests the process was not money-driven. The disagreement escalates after Monye criticises Agada’s fitness to serve as spokesperson, while both sides continue trading accusations amid internal tensions ahead of 2027 elections.
