Indian weightlifter Bindyarani Devi Sorokhaibam wins bronze in the women’s 58kg category at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow. The Indian athlete finishes third with a combined total of 199kg, adding another medal for India in the weightlifting events. Her bronze comes behind Nigeria’s Rafiatu Folashade Lawal, who takes gold with a Games record total of 229kg, and Canada’s Ann Sophie Taschereau, who wins silver with 215kg.
Reports say Bindyarani stays in contention across the event. In the snatch, she starts at 83kg after an adjustment by her coaching staff and successfully lifts subsequent weights to remain level on total with another competitor before countback. In the clean and jerk, an opening attempt of 110kg is ruled a no-lift following a jury review related to an elbow buckle during the jerk. She then rebounds with a successful lift of 112kg, which places her at 199kg.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and India’s Vice-President publicly congratulate her, citing her work and determination. Her Commonwealth Games 2026 medal also follows a silver medal at the 2022 Birmingham Games.
