Vietnamese doctors report completing the country’s first successful penis transplant using tissue from a brain-dead donor. Viet Duc Friendship Hospital in Hanoi announced the outcome on July 29, saying the recipient is a 43-year-old man who previously underwent a partial penectomy at the hospital’s Andrology Center. After the surgery, the patient continued treatment for several years; by the time of the transplant, his overall health is described as stable. The hospital reports that urinary function is preserved following the procedure.

According to the reports, the man’s main problem before the transplant was that the remaining length of his penis was very short, which left him unable to engage in normal sexual activity. This difficulty is described as having a significant impact on his quality of life and psychological well-being. The transplant is described as the result of a multidisciplinary consultation and preparation process. The donor is identified in the hospital’s statement as brain-dead.
