The Nigerian Army on Thursday launched a seminar in Kaduna aimed at strengthening the capacity of its engineers to counter the growing threat of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) in modern security operations.The programme, organised by the 41 Engineer Brigade of 1 Division, coincided with the graduation of participants from Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) X2 Course 126.Speaking at the event, the Commander, Corps of Engineers, Maj.-Gen. S.T. Shafaru represented by Maj.-Gen. Josiah Attah, said the training was designed to equip army engineers with the technical skills needed to support ongoing military operations nationwide. He noted that the initiative aligns with the vision of enhancing the adaptability and resilience of the Nigerian Army in joint and multi-agency missions.Shafaru explained that the EOD course was introduced to address the shortage of specialists and improve operational capability, stressing that IEDs remain one of the most serious threats confronting troops in counter-insurgency operations. He highlighted ongoing collaborations with international partners, including the British Military Assistance Training Team and the German Training and Assistance Group, to boost expertise and intelligence sharing.The General Officer Commanding 1 Division, Maj.-Gen. Abubakar Wase, represented by Brig.-Gen. Anwar Abdullahi, described the seminar as a platform for exchanging ideas with sister security agencies. He said the programme reflects the Chief of Army Staff’s philosophy of operational readiness through continuous training and innovation.Commander of the 41 Engineer Brigade, Brig.-Gen. Sheriff Aremu, noted that the seminar—the first of its kind in 1 Division—was organised alongside the graduation of 31 participants from the EOD course. He said the training was necessary given the increasing use of IEDs in operations such as Operation FANSAN YAMMA.The seminar attracted senior officers, commanders, representatives of other security agencies, and resource persons. It is expected to enhance collaboration and improve the Nigerian Army’s preparedness to detect, neutralise, and manage IED threats in ongoing operations.
