Peter Malnati shoots a 9-under 61 to take the early lead among starters in the first round of the final Rocket Classic in Detroit. Playing at the newly renovated Detroit Golf Club, Malnati finishes bogey-free, making seven birdies on the front nine and two birdies on the back. He comes close to a 60 but misses several opportunities on the greens. The tournament is being played at a course that has undergone major changes, including converting two par-5 holes into par 4s, in an effort to restore the course design envisioned by Donald Ross more than a century ago and to increase the level of challenge. Malnati’s score gives him a share of the advantage as other players tee off later in the round, with the outcome still subject to movement as the rest of the field completes their first-round play.
