Delhi High Court judge Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma initiates criminal contempt proceedings against Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia and other AAP leaders in connection with the Delhi liquor excise policy case. The judge says she cannot “stay silent” after alleged “vilifying,” “contemptuous,” and “defamatory” material was posted against her and the court on social media. She announces that she will pass an order on the contempt aspect around 5 pm, and she has criticised the posts for attributing “political allegiance” to her and for allegedly circulating a misleading “edited” video of a speech she delivered at an educational institution in Varanasi.\nIn earlier hearings, the Delhi High Court issued notices in a suo motu criminal contempt case and asks the politicians to respond within four weeks. The court’s contempt proceedings relate to alleged attacks on the judge rather than the underlying excise policy trial. The CBI’s challenge to a trial court order that discharged Kejriwal, Sisodia and 21 others continues, and the excise matter is taken up by another bench after Justice Sharma’s contempt-related actions.
