Rene Matić is named the winner of the 2026 Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation prize, receiving £30,000. The award is announced at the Photographers’ Gallery in London on May 14. Matić is recognized for the exhibition “AS OPPOSED TO THE TRUTH,” described as their first solo show in Germany, presented at CCA Berlin from November 8, 2024, to February 15, 2025. The Guardian reports that Matić, a photographer from Peterborough, is the youngest person to win the prize at age 29, and was also the youngest artist nominated for the Turner Prize last year. The Guardian notes the work explores themes including queer love, nationalism, and subcultures, and is connected to how Matić unpacks aspects of modern British identity. Other nominated artists named by the Guardian include Jane Evelyn Atwood, Weronika Gęsicka, and Amak Mahmoodian. A separate Guardian piece describes the currently displayed selection of Matić’s work at the Photographers’ Gallery in London as a smaller reconfiguration of the Berlin show, but does not change the basis for the prize decision.
