Peruvian authorities are investigating the crash of a small aircraft carrying tourists to view the Nazca Lines, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The plane crashes Saturday shortly after taking off from Pisco airport, about 240 kilometers south of Lima. All 13 people aboard die in the accident.
Reporting from multiple outlets says the passengers include seven Italians, two Germans, and two Spaniards. The fatalities also include two Peruvian crew members. Investigators and police carry out a recovery process overnight, and bodies are reported as charred and placed in black body bags before transport to a regional morgue.
One account identifies the aircraft as a Cessna 208 Caravan and states it was operating on a tourist route to view the Nazca Lines. Officials do not cite a cause yet, but the investigation focuses on the circumstances surrounding the crash, including the moments after takeoff from Pisco and possible contributing factors.
