The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) keeps placing the Visayas power grid under yellow alert as supply remains tight due to ongoing outages at several large coal-fired power plants. In multiple advisories, NGCP reports that available generation capacity stays near the level of peak demand during late-afternoon to evening hours, leaving the grid vulnerable to additional plant breakdowns. The yellow alert is scheduled for different peak windows across successive days, including periods such as 3 p.m. to 9 p.m., 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., and 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., depending on the day’s operating conditions.
Across these advisories, NGCP cites available capacity around the mid–2,400 megawatts range, against peak demand figures in the low–2,200 megawatts range during the alert periods (for example, 2,470–2,478 MW available versus peaks around 2,291–2,329 MW). NGCP attributes the capacity shortfall to forced outages and emergency shutdowns affecting major coal plants, some of which remain unavailable. Separate reports also note that the grid has previously been raised to red alert, with brownouts possible, when outages and transmission disruptions worsen.
