Nyesom Wike, Nigeria’s Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, says President Bola Tinubu is the only credible leadership option able to address Nigeria’s long-running economic problems. Speaking at his monthly media briefing in Abuja, Wike argues that no other potential presidential contender has shown the courage or capacity to take difficult decisions required for reform. He defends Tinubu’s economic measures, especially the removal of petrol subsidy, describing the move as bold and long overdue. Wike acknowledges that the reforms create temporary hardship for Nigerians, but says they improve the finances of state governments and enable greater funding for infrastructure. He also claims the policy ends a period when states relied heavily on bank borrowing to pay workers’ salaries.
In Wike’s view, expectations that Nigeria’s economy can recover quickly are unrealistic because issues have accumulated over many years. He says “healing takes time,” and that reforms should be assessed by their overall direction and responsibility, rather than by perfection. He portrays the fuel subsidy regime as harmful and cites its estimated cost as context for why the change was necessary.
