The EU’s migration commissioner says the bloc meets a “test” of border security and resilience to disinformation following a large migrant surge into Spain’s North African territory of Ceuta. The commissioner made the comments as EU interior ministers hold an emergency meeting over the incident, days after an extraordinary meeting aimed at addressing tensions among member states and partners.
According to the accounts, more than 70,000 migrants cross the border from Morocco into Ceuta within about 24 hours. The sudden influx increases political and operational tensions across EU partners, but those tensions ease after discussions described as “constructive.” Several interior ministers publicly praise Spain’s handling of the situation, reflecting differences in how member states view the incident and the EU’s response.
The EU commissioner also focuses on information concerns, saying the bloc demonstrates “resilience to disinformation” during the crisis. The emergency meeting continues to assess the situation and coordinate responses, including how the EU manages border pressures and communication during irregular migration events.
